Alternate Team Uniforms

When MLB Brand Design commissioned the Sports Design Agency to develop an alternate uniform set for the Toronto Blue Jays for the 2021 season, the creative brief had two primary mandates.  First, integrate the club’s current fonts and number system into a powder blue uniform inspired by the Blue Jays’ 1977 debut season, which featured pullover tops. A key design element was replacing “TORONTO” with “BLUE JAYS” across the chest on a button-front jersey.

Second, MLB requested the Sports Design Agency to fully explore other creative possibilities—pushing the boundaries of traditional MLB aesthetics through experimental concepts for both jerseys and caps. The final design by the sports branding creative team of Brigitte Smith and Tom O’Grady balanced innovation with heritage, resulting in a clean, modern alternate look that celebrates the franchise’s history with updated Nike performance and styling.
