San Antonio’s Colorful Riverwalk Inspired the Bright and Festive 1996 NBA All-Star Branding.
‘96 NBA ALL-STAR
san Antonio, TX
The 1996 NBA All-Star Games’ project challenge was daunting. It needed to exceed huge expectations following all the brand accolades of wildly successful ’95 All-Star Game in Phoenix. Relying on the playful turquoise, fuchsia, orange, black and silver fiesta colors of the host team San Antonio Spurs, the primary logo was whimsical and celebratory, a true reflection of the Hispanic heritage in the region. The Alamodome was at the center of the primary logo design anchored by the popular “chili-peppers” secondary logos. A fiesta trim pattern was created providing a visual thread extended cleverly on the side of team uniforms, court baselines, courtside signage and event print collateral. Today, the 1996 All-Star game uniforms are STILL a Mitchell & Ness top selling vintage product. And a quarter century later, the NFL, NHL and Major League Baseball’s events branding still utilize the visual packaging templates developed for the 1995 and 1996 NBA All-Star Games.
