TEAM REBRANDING
In 1988, the Charlotte Hornets unveiled new logos and uniforms which would change the way teams approached design into the 1990’s. Created by men’s fashion designer, Alexander Julian, the new look featured “teal”, a blue and green color combination along with a series of secondary logos featured as thin pinstripes on the jersey. In short time, the color teal was being introduced for new expansion teams across the four pro sports. In 1994, the NBA was looking to drive new revenues for licensed product sales and so OSD founder Tom O’Grady went about switching the primary color of a series of teams uniform colors, what were called alternate color uniforms, which five teams started wearing in 1994-95. The Hornets purple alternate, which became a wildly popular option and drove huge new revenue streams to NBA Properties.
