Sophisticated Visual Rebranding of Wizards Solved Very Complicated DC Name Change.
WASHINGTON WIZARDS
NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION
TEAM RENAMING AND TEAM IDENTITY
When long-time Washington DC NBA team owner Abe Pollin, decided to change the name of his team from Bullets to Wizards. Instead of pursuing a Gandalf-like Lord of the Rings wizard logo, O’Grady opted for an abstract graphic wizard symbol moving away from the popular trend of illustrative designs of the colorful and bold ‘90s sports team identity rebrands. The sophisticated slate blue, bronze and black color scheme matched the other MCI Center team, the NHL Washington Capitals. In 2001, Michael Jordan came out of retirement to join the Wizards bringing a large amount of attention to the O’Grady branded identity.
